Groups

There are five groups with the end sound g and five groups with the end sound n. In the following page these groups will be read in the first tone. The first tone is like singing a sustained note. Please listen and repeat after me.

 

Say ā and touch your soft palate with the back of your tongue. āng=a+ng

Say ō and touch your soft palate with the back of your tongue. ōng=o+ng

Say ē and touch your soft palate with the back of your tongue. ēng=e+ng

Say ī and touch your soft palate with the back of your tongue. īng=i+ng

If a word beings with i the written from is y, so ing would be written ying but still pronounced ing.

Say uā and touch your soft palate with the back of your tongue. uāng=ua+ng

If a word beings with u the written from is w, so uang would be written wang but still pronounced uang.

Keep saying the æ sound, then touch the front of your hard palate with the tip of your tongue.

ān+n

Keep saying the ē sound, then touch front of your hard palate with the tip of your tongue.

ēn=e+n

Keep saying the ī sound, then touch front of your hard palate with the tip of your tongue.
īn=i+n

If a word beings with i the written from is y, so in would be written yin but still pronounced in.

ūn is an abbreviated form. The actual pronunciation is uēn Say ū first, then en.
ūn=uē+n

If a word beings with u the written from is w, so un (uen) would be written wen but still pronounced un (uen).

If a word beings with ü the written from is yu, so ün would be written yun but still pronounced ün.
