Stand-alone Chinese language papers for postgraduates in other disciplines

The British Inter-university China Centre (BICC) and the Institute for Chinese Studies have been offering one-year long courses in Chinese language teaching for postgraduates in disciplines other than Oriental Studies since 2009.  The programme provides intensive and systematic teaching in Chinese language skills from beginners to upper-intermediate level, with an emphasis on research requirements.  The courses are structured as fully examined papers, both in order to ensure student commitment and, if their home department has given permission, to allow students to have the paper count towards their degree work in Oxford.  We hope that departments across the University will encourage their graduate students to participate.

As we have a limited number of language teachers, we can currently offer no more than eight places at each level.  Students who would like to take a course will be asked to register with the Institute for Chinese Studies and take a placement tests (except for ab initio level students) on Thursday in 0th week of MT so that we can allocate them to a suitable level.  Places will be allocated on a first-come-first served basis, and only to students who can demonstrate that their department is willing to cover the cost of their attendance.  Please note, for students in the Social Sciences the cost of this teaching is covered by the Area Studies Concordat; for all other students fixed rates apply.  Information about costs is available on the faculty website at: http://www.orinst.ox.ac.uk/general/classes.html.
