The 9th BCLTS International Symposium on Innovation and Standardisation in Teaching and Learning Chinese

The British Chinese Language Teaching Society (BCLTS) is pleased to announce that the 9th BCLTS International Symposium will be held from 29th June 2011 to 1st July 2011 at the University of Edinburgh, UK. It will be an opportunity to address the current issues that CFL/CSL teaching professionals face, particularly in the areas of innovative methods, material design, benchmarking, assessment, e-learning, intercultural communication and developments in teaching and learning Chinese. The symposium will consist of a range of presentations by speakers from China, the UK, and other countries, and will provide opportunities for CFL/CSL language teachers to share teaching and research experience.
Submissions of paper abstracts related to the broad themes of the conference are now invited. BCLTS members, non-members and researchers from in and outside the UK are welcome to present papers and participate in the symposium. Suggested topic areas for discussion include (but are not limited to) the following and papers in other areas relevant to the teaching and learning of Chinese are also encouraged:
Innovation:
· Integration of traditional Chinese language teaching with Western Applied Linguistics theories
· New strategies in teaching and learning Chinese
· Teaching and learning resources (textbooks, audio/video materials)
· Web 2.0 in interactive learning and the impact of the web on knowledge explosion
· Chinese in specialised areas (Business Chinese, Medicine Chinese etc.)
· Attainment in Chinese language/culture and Intercultural communication
Standardisation:
· Benchmarking, assessment (listening, speaking, reading, writing, translation and interpreting)
· Language teaching within Chinese Studies to Chinese-majored students
· The nature, current situation and management of teaching and learning Chinese
· Research on vocabulary, grammar, texts etc.
Guidelines for paper abstract submission:
Proposals for papers are now invited. Topics on any aspect of Chinese Language teaching and learning related to the main themes of the conference will be considered. The working languages of the conference will be English and Chinese. Individual papers will be given 30 minutes (20 minutes presentation plus 10 minutes discussion) if accepted. Abstracts in either English or Chinese, or both, are acceptable.
Abstract submissions should include the following information:
1. Title of the paper
2. Full name, gender and affiliation of the author(s)
3. An abstract of 250-300 words
4. The first author’s postal address, e-mail, telephone and fax numbers

The travel expense of BCLTS members will be reimbursed by BCLTS if your paper is accepted and is delivered at the conference.
Deadline for abstract submission: Friday 22nd April, 2011
Date of notification of results: 13th May 2011
Registration deadline: Friday 20th May, 2011
Please register with Dr. Wendy Che at Oxford Brooks University via email wche@brookes.ac.uk). For those wanting accommodation, a deposit of £30.00 (cheque payable to University of Oxford) should arrive by Friday 20th May 2011. BCLTS members who book accommodation but fail to show will forfeit the deposit of £30 per member. The cheques will be returned to members who come to the conference at registration.
There is a £20.00 registration fee for non-members. This fee is waived for those whose papers are accepted for presentation at the conference. The accommodation cost is £35 per night for a single room.
