The Conference

The British Chinese Language Teachers Society (BCLTS) is pleased to announce BCLTS 6th International Symposium will be held on 30th June – 2nd July 200 at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. The conference theme is ‘Chinese Language Teaching and Learning: Theory and Practice Theories’. Submissions of paper abstracts are now invited related to the broad theme of Chinese teaching and learning. The theme is of significance to many areas of interest to the Chinese language teaching community in the UK and beyond. As more universities have introduced Chinese language into the curriculum at both degree and non-degree level, we have seen an increased diversity of Chinese language programmes, teaching styles and learning strategies. This international symposium aims to provide an unique opportunity to critically reflect on the rapid developments of Chinese language teaching in the UK and beyond, focusing on practical issues from both empirical and theoretical perspectives.

The conference theme opens up a host of questions that are central to the interests of Chinese language teachers. Papers in other areas relevant to the teaching and learning of Chinese as a foreign language are also encouraged. Workshops will be organised during the conference for a wider participation in discussions on issues that interest most practitioners. BCLTS members, non-members and scholars from in and outside the UK are very welcome to present papers and participate in the conference. Suggested topical areas for discussion include (but not limited to) the following:

·        Learner-centred teaching

·        Assessment (listening, speaking, reading, writing, translation and interpreting)

·        Online teaching, learning and resources

·        Teaching methodology

·        Chinese learning strategies

·        Common standards of non-major British university Chinese courses

·        Issues of textbooks and material development

·        ICT and Chinese language teaching and learning
