Online Chinese language courses

The supplementary materials for New Practical Chinese Reader  are very good and the animated Chinese character writing is suitable for beginners.

Chinese Character Writing Exercise Sheets for Practical Chinese Reader Books 1 and 2.

Chinese word list for PCR chapters 1 through 23

All words are sorted by chapter and found in one single
PDF file. Included are instructions for quickly transforming the word list into a lot of small flash cards.  (only has simplified, though)

Harvard University Chinese Language web site, which has a good pinyin table. RealPlayer is needed.
Chinese Culture: Language
This site explains how pinyin should be pronounced.
Pinyin Practice University of IOWA
The 'practice' parts may have some technical problems. It has a good Pinyin Chat facility.

Ni Hao  is a basic course for beginning students of Chinese.
It provides students with the opportunity to develop communicative
skills in both spoken and written Chinese at a basic level. Each level of the
series contains a textbook with CD-ROM, a student workbook, a teacher's
handbook, a set of audio cassettes, audio CDs and 'Games' software.

Clavis Sinica
Clavis Sinica is a new Chinese language learning program developed at the University of Michigan. As an introductory offer,  free copies of Clavis Sinica will be provided for a limited time to the students of any instructor who would
like to experiment with using the program in a Chinese language or literature
course this semester.  If you would like to take advantage of this offer,

Open University

The Open University is recruiting part-time tutors for new beginners' Chinese course, which starts in November 2009. L197 第一步 Beginners' Chinese will give students the skills they need to speak and understand simple Chinese in everyday contexts. The course will take students through a wide range of practical situations such as socialising, shopping and getting around. Students receive printed and audio materials, and have a dedicated website. This will be a mixture of interactive tools and additional audio and reading material. This course is taught by a blended tuition of online conferencing, face-to-face tutorials and online forums. You will be teaching on average three hours a week.
