Situation

A is a Chinese immigration officer.

B is a British student who has just arrived in Beijing and is going to Beijing Language and Culture University to study, but has got a wrong kind of visa.

C is an office worker at the Beijing Language University, which will be played by B, talking on the phone.

Tasks for A, a Chinese immigration officer

Make the conversation as realistic as possible by greeting each other at the beginning and by using small talk. Try to anticipate the flow of the conversation by looking at the following prompts.

  1. Ask B the duration of his/her stay in Beijing.
  2. Look at B’s visa and tell B that he/she has got a tourist visa which is not for students of Chinese.
  3. Ask B to write down his/her contact in China for you.
  4. B must report (报到 bàodào V., e.g. a place 报到) to the local police station (派出所 pàichūsuŏ N) if he/she is going to stay with his/ her friend in China.
  5. As B does not have his/her contact details, phone C, an office worker of Beijing Language University to check if C knows B’s contact 张华光 Zhāng Huáguāng.
  6. Tell B that without knowing the details of his/her destination in China, you are unable to let him/her enter China.
