Situation

A is a Chinese customs officer.

B is a British student who is leaving China for Hong Kong.

Tasks for B, a British student

Make the conversation as realistic as possible by greeting each other at the beginning and by using small talk. Try to anticipate the flow of the conversation by looking at the following prompts.

  1. (Look for the customs form which you filled in when you arrived in China.)      Hand it over to A, the customs officer, and apologise for forgetting it.
  2. Tell A that your digital movie camera has been stolen.
  3. Tell A that you were unable to meet up with the friend you had intended to see in Beijing, as he had gone abroad.
  4. Tell A that there is no way that you will pay 200% tax on the camera. Your camera was stolen when you were staying in a hotel.
  5. Tell A that you have a note written by the hotel manager.
  6. If A asks you to open your suitcase, tell him/her that you have nothing to declare at customs.
  7. Tell A that you don't usually keep receipts.
  8. Ask A where you can change your 10,000 Yuan RMB back into Sterling.
