We will hear a conversation about studying in China, between A, David Beard, a student of Chinese and B, Mr. Chen, a visiting scholar from a Chinese university.

 

A:            chén   xiānshēng     nín hǎo

                陈      先     生      您 好。

   Chen  Mr.            you good

                Hello, Mr. Chen

 

B:            dàwèi     nǐ   hǎo

    大卫,   你   好。

        David   you good  

        Hello David.

 

A:            wǒ xīwàng míngnián qù nǐnmén xuéxiào jìnxiū                 xíng  ma

    我  希望    明年     去  你们   学校    进修。             行    吗？

          I    hope  next year  go  your    school  take a course    OK MA

          I hope to study a course at your university next year. Do you think it’s possible?

 

B:             hǎo    a    huānyíng     nǐ  xīwàng   jìnxiū  shénme  zhuānyè

                好     啊，欢迎！    你  希望     进修  什么     专业？

          good       welcome    you hope      take   what    subject

    Yes, but what subject would you like to study?

 

A:             nǐmen xuéxiào  zhuānyè  duō    ma

                你们   学校      专业     多      吗？

     you   school    subject  many  MA

                Does your university have many subjects?

 

B:             ò     hěn  duō     yǒu sānshí duō    zhǒng    ne

    噢，很   多，   有   三十  多     种        呢。 

    oh   very many    has  30    more  type      NE

   Oh, yes, there are over 30 different subjects

    bǐrú      yǔyán      wénxué     lìshǐ      yìshù     jīngjì         fǎlǜ    shùxué            huàxué     wùlǐ     děngděng

                比如:   语言、    文学、   历史、艺术、经济、   法律、数学、          化学、  物理    等等。

               such as languages  literature  history   arts    economics   law    mathematics  chemistry  physics etc

               such as, language, literature history, arts, economics, law, mathematics, chemistry and physics etc.

 

A:            wǒ xiǎng   jìnxiū zhōngguó xiàndài   wénxué     xíng ma

    我 想       进修  中国        现代     文学。   行   吗？

                 I   intend  take   China      modern   literature  OK MA

    I would like to study Modern Chinese Literature. Is it possible?

 

B:              xíng   nǐ  hěn cōngming    yòu  hěn  nǔlì        wǒ  xiāngxìn méi yǒu wèntí

                  行。你  很    聪明，    又   很  努力。  我   相   信  没  有   问题。

            OK. You very clever     and  very  diligent   I    believe  not  have problem

     Yes. You are very bright and hard working. I believe there is no problem.

 

A:              kěshì wǒ méi yǒu qián.      nǐmen xuéxiào néng  gěi  wǒ jiǎngxuéjīn   ma

      可是 我  没  有     钱。  你们  学校     能     给  我  奖  学 金   吗？

       but    I   not  have money  your  school   can   give me scholarship   MA

    But I have no money. Could your school provide me with scholarship?

 

B:              hěn   nán   shuō    búguò    nǐ    kěyǐ   yìbiān jiāo   yīngwén yìbiān jìnxiū               kùnnán   róngyì  jiějué

          很     难      说。 不过，你   可以 一边   教    英文     一边  进修。           困难      容易   解决。

    very difficult say   however you  can    while teach English   while take a course  difficulty   easy     solve

         It’s hard to say. But, you can teach English while you are studying. The problem can be easily solved.

 

A:              nín  néng bāngzhù wǒ liánxi    ma

                  您    能   帮助    我  联系   吗？

         Can you help me to contact your university?

 

B:              kěyǐ

                 可以。

3.  Explain the following situation in Chinese.

 

Mr. Chen comes from a Chinese university last year. He teaches Chinese in an U.K. university. He is a very good teacher. His student, David is bright and hardworking. David would like to study Chinese Modern Literature at the university where Mr. Chen came from. However, David does not have enough money. He asks Mr. Chen to solve this problem for him. Mr. Chen says that David can teach English while learning Chinese. Mr. Chen says that he will contact his university for David. 

          

4.  Read the dialogue out loud and pay attention to the tones and pronunciation.

 

5.  You would like to study at the Chinese university where a visiting scholar of your college is from. Ask him about the available courses and scholarships at that university.
