The SHI…DE construction is used to emphasize the elements which are placed between SHI and DE. These elements can be time, place or how an action took place in the past such as in

     什么     时候  出生   ?           

nǐ    shì   shénme shíhou chūshēng de

you SHI what     time    be born DE          

When were you born?

 

The SHI…DE construction can also be used to emphasize that an agent carries out the action as in

   朋友   给                

shì péngyou gěi de

SHI friend give DE            

It was given by a friend.

The emphasis is on “the friend”, and this is placed between and.
