Lesson Three How many are there in your family Although the family is a common topic of conversation in Britain, English people may not feel comfortable if too many details are asked for. Chinese people feel differently. Talking about your family is a way to show friendliness. So, questions such as ‘how old are you’, ‘are you married’ and ‘what’s your salary’ might be asked even of a stranger. Follow the saying ‘when in Rome do as the Romans do’ and be prepared to follow these customs in order to have good relations with Chinese people when you go to China one day. Basic expressions
