Level 1 Basic Chinese language
Entry Requirement
|
This level is for students who are
complete beginners or are false
beginners, but not up to the next level.

Duration
|
3 terms
|
Teaching materials
|
A textbook covering about 500-550 simplified
Chinese characters and most basic grammar
points.
|
Language skills
|
Reading, writing and translation skills.
Speaking and listening skills will also be
taught and tested during this period.
|
Contact hours
|
A total of approximately 3 hours a week: on
vocabulary, texts and speaking + works on
the internet.
|
Study time
|
6-7 hours a week.
|
Examinations
|
A collection at the beginning of Hilary and
Trinity Term, and official examinations in
writing, reading, listening and speaking
skills at the end of Trinity Term.
|
Level 2 Lower-intermediate Chinese language
Entry Requirement
|
Students have
excelled the beginner level, are
confident in daily communication and able to
recognise and write about 500-550
Chinese characters, Students must have
learnt most of the main grammar points.

Duration
|
3 terms
|
Teaching materials
|
Textbooks that will enable students to read
and write about 850 simplified Chinese
characters.
|
Language skills
|
Reading, writing and translation skills.
Speaking and listening skills will also be
taught and tested during this period.
|
Contact hours
|
A total of approximately 3 hours +
works on the internet.
|
Study time
|
5-6 hours a week.
|
Examinations
|
Collections at the beginning of Hilary and
Trinity Term and official examinations in
writing, reading, speaking and listening
skills at the end of Trinity Term.

Level 3 Intermediate Chinese language
Entry Requirement
|
Students must have already taken an intensive Chinese
course for (at least) one year and have
spent (at least) six months in China.
|
Duration
|
3 terms
|
Teaching materials
|
Newspaper articles; materials from the
Internet; and Chinese TV news programmes. By
the end of the course students should know
about 1,150 simplified Chinese characters.

Language skills
|
Reading, writing and translation skills.
Oral presentation and listening skills will
also be taught and tested during this
period.
|
Contact hours
|
A total of approximately 2 hours a week on
learning materials and oral presentation
work + 1 hour for internet-based materials.
In addition, an optional class of daily
Chinese TV news is offered, with language
instructor support.

Study time
|
5 hours a week.
|
Examinations
|
Collections at the beginning of Hilary and
Trinity Term and official examinations at
the end of Trinity Term.
|
Level 4 Upper-intermediate Chinese language
Entry Requirement
|
Students must have already taken an
intensive Chinese course for (at least) two years
and have spent (at least) six months in
China. The students must also have the
knowledge of the basic Chinese newspaper reading skills.
|
Duration
|
3 terms.
|
Teaching materials
|
Materials from the Internet and Chinese TV
news programmes. By the end of the course
students should know about 2,000 simplified
Chinese characters.
|
Language skills
|
Reading, writing and translation skills.
Oral presentation and listening skills will
also be taught and tested during this
period.
|
Contact hours
|
A total of 1.5 hours a week on translation
into Chinese and oral presentation + 2 hours
for the internet-based reading, translation
and listening.
In addition, an optional class of daily
Chinese TV news is offered, with language
instructor support.

Study time
|
5 hours a week.
|
Examinations
|
Collections at the beginning of Hilary and
Trinity Term and official examinations at
the end of Trinity Term.
