Comments  Alternatively: 我 生 在 中 国, 可 是 在 英 国 长 大  wǒ shēng zài Zhōngguó, kěshì zài Yīngguó zhǎng dà. 在 zài can be placed after a verb when the action has a direct effect on the object, as in 写 在 纸 上 xiě zài zhǐ shàng to write on the paper; 坐 在 地 上 zuò zài dì shàng to sit on the ground; and 睡 在 旁 边  shuì zài báng biān to sleep beside (someone). However, 在 zài is used as a co-verb when actions have no direct effects on the object of 在 zài . For instance, 在 中 国 学 习 zài Zhōngguó xuéxí to study in China; 在 饭 店 吃 饭 zài fàndiàn chī fàn to eat in a restaurant; 在 英 国 长 大 zài Yīngguó zhǎng dà to grow up in Britain. However, in the above answer 生 在 shēng zài and 长 在 zhǎng zài are used as idiomatic expressions. It would also be correct to use 在 zài as a co-verb in the above answer, and say 我 在 中 国 生 wǒ zài Zhōngguó shēng and 在 英 国 长 zài Yīngguó zhǎng.
