Comments  The complement of degree construction is used to describe how habitual actions are carried out. The word 很 hěn is added not only to give the meaning very, but also to serve a grammatical purpose. If there were no word before 好 hǎo, as in 吃 得 好 chī de hǎo, the listeners might think that a potential verb phrase pattern was being used, as in 作 得 好, 作 不 好 zuò de hǎo,  zuò bu hǎo to be able or unable to finish doing.
