Stand-alone Chinese Language Papers for 20010-2011    SCLP Home

There are four levels all together for the SCLP programme. Please see the attached descriptions of the classes.

Students taking the Stand-Alone Language Papers at the following four levels must attend an induction session at 10am, Monday of 0th week in Michaelmas Term (4th Oct 2010) at the Institute for Chinese Studies (ICS), Walton Street, Oxford OX1 2HG. Those who are not complete beginners need to attend individual interviews at 11am to discuss their language level and some may need to sit the placement tests at 2pm. 

Students can only change their levels of language classes within the first two weeks of Michaelmas Term under the consultation of the language teachers.

Students who are interested in taking these language classes are strongly advised to do some preparatory study before Michaelmas Term (Oct 2010).

Level 1 Basic Chinese language

Please study Lessons 1-8 of the textbook Practical Chinese Reader I, the electronic version of the book can be found on the following link, with scripts and sound files of the lessons. (Please ignore the term and lesson plans given on the webpage, which are for a more intensive language course. The term and lesson plans for your course will be given after the course starts.)

Level 2 Lower-intermediate Chinese language

The textbook for this level is Practical Chinese Reader II. It is important that students of this level are aware of the vocabularies and grammar in the first book - Practical Chinese Reader I, the electronic version of which can be found on the following link, with scripts and sound files of the lessons. (Please ignore the term and lesson plans given on the webpage, which are for a more intensive language course. The term and lesson plans for your course will be given after the course starts.)

Level 3 Intermediate Chinese language

At this level, students will read newspaper articles using a book written by the CTCFL, Oxford. Students need to study the first three lessons of the book prior to Oxford, which can be found on the following link where Newspaper Articles 1,2, and 3 are listed (you may ignore the rest of the webpage).

Level 4 Upper-intermediate Chinese language

At this level, students are provided with authentic Chinese materials in Chinese newspaper and websites. Previous assignments can be found on the following link, students may choose to study some of these materials on their own:
